General & Company Questions
Who we are, what we work on, and how to get us out to your site.

What areas does Coast 2 Coast Refrigeration serve?
We serve businesses and boat owners throughout San Diego County from our base at 550 Marina Parkway in Chula Vista. That includes Chula Vista, National City, Coronado, El Cajon, La Mesa, Escondido, Mission Bay and Shelter Island. See the full list on our service areas page, or call (619) 288-3842 to confirm we cover your location.
What types of refrigeration equipment do you work on?
Over the years we have installed and serviced just about everything in commercial refrigeration: small systems, multiplex systems, reach-in display cases and line-ups, walk-in coolers and freezers, ice machines, under-counter and upright reach-ins, wine storage, air dryers, supermarket walk-ins, pharmacological cold storage, and clean room and laboratory coolers and freezers. We also handle marine refrigeration and air conditioning. Browse our services or just call and ask -- if it keeps product cold, there is a good chance we work on it.
Are you licensed and insured?
Yes. Coast 2 Coast Refrigeration holds California C-38 Refrigeration Contractor License #1049120 and North Carolina License #4502. Founder Raymond Barnes made sure the company carried all insurances, bond and other licenses from the start, and we are happy to provide documentation on request. You can read more about the company on our About Us page.
Who is Coast 2 Coast Refrigeration?
Raymond Barnes established Coast 2 Coast Refrigeration in January 2019 to serve the San Diego Bay area -- covering everything from the simplest refrigeration or A/C system to full commercial installations, and deliberately including the boating world alongside traditional business customers. Our philosophy is that the solution should be tailored to the size, space and need you actually have. Read the full story on our About Us page and see what customers say on our testimonials page.
Do you work with residential customers?
Our focus is commercial refrigeration, small business refrigeration and marine refrigeration and boat A/C -- that is where our technicians, parts inventory and licensing are concentrated. We do take calls from homeowners with wine cellar cooling systems and similar equipment. The fastest way to find out whether we are the right fit for your situation is to get in touch and describe the unit.
Do you offer preventive maintenance plans?
Yes. Rather than a one-size-fits-all contract, we build a maintenance plan around your equipment and your operation. Together we set the plan, then we implement it so you can focus on running your business. Planned maintenance keeps systems operating at peak condition, cuts energy waste and reduces the odds of a breakdown during service hours. Our article on how often commercial refrigeration should be inspected explains what a sensible schedule looks like.
Do you work outside of San Diego County?
San Diego County is our home market and where the large majority of our work happens. We are also licensed in North Carolina (License #4502) and maintain a North Carolina line at (919) 799-0276. If you have a project or a piece of equipment outside our usual coverage area, reach out and we will tell you honestly whether we can help or point you to someone who can.
Commercial Refrigeration Questions
Restaurants, grocery, warehouses, pharmacies -- protecting the product you sell.

What commercial refrigeration equipment do you install and repair?
If you run a restaurant, grocery store, cafeteria, pub, pharmacy or warehouse, we are there to protect the investment sitting in your coolers. We have installed small systems, multiplex systems, reach-in display cases and line-ups, walk-in coolers and freezers and ice machines. We know the main manufacturers and the real strengths and weaknesses of each. Full detail on our commercial refrigeration page.
Why is my commercial refrigerator not holding temperature?
Temperature drift usually traces back to a handful of culprits: a dirty or blocked condenser coil, failing door gaskets, an iced-over evaporator, a low refrigerant charge caused by a leak, or a controller or defrost problem. Some of those you can check yourself in a minute; others need gauges. We walk through the whole diagnostic sequence in Why Is My Commercial Refrigerator Not Holding Temperature?. If product is at risk, call us rather than waiting it out.
How often should commercial refrigeration be inspected?
Regular inspection is the cheapest thing you will ever do for a refrigeration system -- it catches small faults before they become emergency callouts and keeps energy costs down. The right interval depends on the equipment, how hard it runs and how dirty the environment is. Our guide, How Often Should Commercial Refrigeration Be Inspected?, breaks it down by equipment type, and we will set a schedule with you as part of a maintenance plan.
Do you repair walk-in coolers and freezers?
Yes -- walk-ins are core work for us, from door and gasket problems to compressor, condenser and defrost failures. Two resources worth reading: 8 Signs Your Walk-In Cooler Needs Professional Repair and our full guide to walk-in cooler repair in San Diego. If a freezer is the problem, see fast walk-in freezer repair. We also cover walk-in cooler repair in El Cajon specifically.
Do you service ice machines?
We do. Ice machines are one of the most-used and least-maintained pieces of equipment in most kitchens and bars, and scale build-up, water quality and dirty condensers quietly kill production long before the machine stops entirely. Read San Diego Ice Machine Repair -- Don't Wait Until It's Too Late for the warning signs, then book a service visit.
How long does it take to install a walk-in refrigerator?
Installation time depends on the size of the box, the site conditions, the refrigeration system you choose and how much electrical and structural prep is needed before the panels go up. We scope every install before we quote it, so you get a realistic timeline rather than an optimistic one. Our article How Long Does It Take to Install a Walk-In Refrigerator? explains the stages, and the commercial refrigeration page covers our installation approach.
Small Business Refrigeration Questions
Liquor stores, bakeries, breweries, pizzerias, florists -- where there is no room for error.

What kinds of small businesses do you work with?
We have worked with small businesses since day one: liquor stores, bakeries, food marts, breweries and brewpubs, pizzerias, small grocery stores, florists, casual dining establishments, butcheries, wine cellars and seafood markets. Our technicians are familiar with the electrical, mechanical and everyday issues that come with this equipment, and they look for the best long-term fix rather than the quickest patch. See the small business refrigeration page for details.
Do you service liquor store and convenience store coolers?
Yes -- glass-door reach-ins, beer caves, walk-in boxes and the display coolers at the front of the store. When a cooler goes down in a liquor store, the inventory at risk is worth far more than the repair, which is why we prioritize these calls. We wrote about it in Top-Rated Liquor Store Refrigeration Repair in San Diego. Contact us if a unit is drifting warm.
Can you service brewery, brewpub and bar refrigeration?
We can. Glycol systems, walk-in cold rooms, keg coolers, back-bar units and draft lines all have their own failure modes, and San Diego has more of this equipment per square mile than almost anywhere. Start with Brewery Fridge Repair: Essential Services for San Diego's Beer Scene and San Diego Commercial Bar Refrigeration Service Specialists.
Do you work on wine cellar cooling and WhisperKool units?
Yes. Coast 2 Coast Refrigeration works with and is trained to work on all WhisperKool cooling units, and we service wine storage systems generally. Wine is unforgiving about temperature and humidity swings, so a failing cellar unit is a genuine emergency for a collection. See Don't Let a Broken Cooling System Ruin Your Wine Collection for what to watch for.
Will new or upgraded equipment actually lower my energy costs?
Usually, yes. We provide state-of-the-art technology that is greener and uses fewer resources, and for a small business, energy efficiency directly cuts operational costs. Even without replacing equipment, getting existing systems back to peak condition -- clean coils, correct charge, working defrost, sound door seals -- typically shows up on the power bill. Ask us to include an efficiency review in your next small business service visit.
Marine Refrigeration & Boat A/C Questions
Yachts, sport-fishers and sailboats across San Diego Bay and the marinas.

What marine refrigeration systems do you service?
Whether your vessel uses a drop-in unit, a cold-plate or a holding-plate system, our team can handle it -- electrical or mechanical. We cover installation, maintenance and emergency repair, and we work on boats of every size, up to and including large vessels such as the 225ft Ocean Titan. The marine refrigeration page has the full picture.
Why is my boat refrigerator not cooling?
On a boat the usual suspects are different from a shore-based fridge: inadequate DC voltage or a tired battery bank, a blocked or air-locked raw-water circuit on a water-cooled unit, poor ventilation around an air-cooled condenser, a refrigerant leak, or a failing thermostat. Our guide Boat Refrigerator Not Cooling? Here's Why -- and How to Fix It walks through each one, and Common Causes of Marine Refrigeration Issues covers prevention.
How often does marine refrigeration need to be recharged?
A properly sealed system should not need routine recharging at all -- if it does, you have a leak, and topping it up without finding that leak just delays the real repair. What marine systems genuinely need is regular maintenance to stay efficient. We explain the difference in How Often Does Marine Refrigeration Need to Be Recharged?, and Signs Your Boat Freezer Needs Repair covers the early warnings.
Do you repair marine air conditioning?
Yes -- marine A/C is a significant part of our marine work, including compressor repair and replacement. Read Marine AC Repair in San Diego and Why You Should Have a Professional Repair or Replace Your Marine Air Compressor. Our Shelter Island marine A/C and refrigeration page covers that area specifically.
Can you install a refrigerator on my boat?
We can set a system up from the ground up. Adding refrigeration to a vessel is not simply buying a box and plugging it in -- you have to consider what power you have on board and how much battery the system will draw, what space is available, where the compressor goes, and what size, finish and location the refrigeration box needs. See Adding a Refrigerator to Your Boat and How to Choose the Right Boat Refrigerator Size for Your Vessel. And if we conclude we are not the right ones to do the installation, we will tell you that too.
Which marinas and waterfront areas do you cover?
We work across San Diego Bay and the surrounding waterfront, including Shelter Island, Coronado and Mission Bay. If your slip is elsewhere in the county, check the service areas page or call (619) 288-3842 -- we will tell you straight away whether we can get to you.
Cost, Estimates & Repair vs. Replace
How pricing works, and how we help you decide whether to fix it or replace it.

What determines the cost of a commercial refrigeration repair?
Cost comes down to what actually failed, what the part costs and how long the job takes -- a door gasket or a dirty condenser is a different conversation from a compressor or a leak buried in a line set. Access matters too: a rooftop condensing unit or a below-deck marine installation takes longer to reach than a reach-in on a kitchen floor. We diagnose first, then tell you what we found and what it will take. Contact us with your equipment details for a realistic answer.
Do you provide estimates before starting work?
Yes. We diagnose the problem, explain what we found in plain language, and tell you what the repair involves before we proceed -- no surprise work and no runaround. For installations and larger projects we scope the job properly first so the number you get reflects the actual site conditions. Use the form on our contact page or call (619) 288-3842 to get started.
Should I repair my equipment or replace it?
It depends on the age of the unit, what has failed, whether parts are still available, how efficient the system is compared with a current one, and how central the equipment is to your operation. Sometimes the honest answer is that a repair buys you a season and a replacement is the better investment -- and we will say so. Our philosophy is to tailor the solution to the size, space and need you actually have, not to sell the biggest system. Read more about how we work.
Can regular maintenance reduce what I spend on repairs?
Consistently, yes. Focusing on tune-ups and small repairs saves money over the long term, and for a small business there is very little room for error when a system fails. Maintenance keeps equipment at peak condition, holds down energy costs and reduces the risk of an emergency callout at the worst possible moment. Ask us about a maintenance plan when you get in touch.
Emergency Service & Service Areas
When a system goes down and there is product on the line.

Do you offer emergency refrigeration repair?
Yes. If you experience a refrigeration breakdown, call us immediately -- we take all the calls, all the time, and we are set up to provide emergency refrigeration repair and maintenance to supermarkets, restaurants and other locations throughout San Diego. Our goal on an emergency call is to find fast solutions that protect the product sitting in the failed system and limit the risk to your business. Call (619) 288-3842.
What should I do while I wait for a technician?
Keep doors closed as much as you possibly can -- every opening dumps cold air you cannot get back. Move the most valuable and most temperature-sensitive product to a working unit if you have one. Write down the temperature and the time so you have a record for food safety and for any insurance claim. Check that the unit still has power and that nothing is blocking airflow around the condenser. Then leave the rest to us.
What information should I have ready when I call?
It speeds things up considerably if you can tell us the type of equipment, the manufacturer and model if it is on the data plate, what the unit is doing (or not doing), what temperature it is holding, when the problem started, and whether anything changed recently -- a power outage, a deep clean, a delivery that blocked airflow. Have your address and site access details handy too. Then call (619) 288-3842 or use the contact form.
Which cities do you cover for emergency calls?
We respond across San Diego County. Dedicated pages cover Chula Vista, National City, Coronado, El Cajon, La Mesa, Escondido, Mission Bay and Shelter Island, and the full list lives on our service areas page. Not sure whether you are in range? Call (619) 288-3842 and ask.
Still Have a Question? Talk to a Technician.
If your question is not answered here, or a system is down right now, call us. We take all the calls, all the time.
